Minis & Donkeys & Ponies

UPDATED August 17, 2008

You may have seen the story on FOX 9 News, have heard it through the grapevine, or read the post on the home page, but in case you haven't, here's the skinny: some 50+ miniature horses, donkeys, and ponies wereseized by the Hooved Animal Rescue last week. Because of this incredible amount of equines, we are at what can be described as a "desparate need" for space, medicine, and hay.

Here's a link to the news story on www.myfoxtwincities.com if you like to read more on the story. For a video of the story, look towards the bottom of the "Sidebar", under the "Videos" link.

All of these horses are in need of vaccinations, Coggins tests, and hoof trims. If the animal is female, then we can guarantee that the horse is pregnant because stallions and mares intermingled freely. And in order to make sure these mares are kept in tip-top health, we need some good quality hay to make sure they can produce the nourishment for their foals - both before and after the birth. At least one mare needs to have eye surgery to properly treat a lost right eye. And last, but most assuredly not least, we need good homes for all these animals.

The animals are not in poor health (well, compared to some horses we bring in), but a good share of themhave not been handled or trained. They are extremely shy and fearful of humans. We truly hope the mares andfoals can be adopted together so that the newborns can get a chance at a better life than what the adults have had.

Because of the vast number of these animals, we've created this special page to give an overview of these animals. Most of the animals are miniature horses, and like we said, if it's female,it's pregnant. If it's male, it's a stallion (and soon to be gelded). Next in line are quite a few miniature spotted donkeys, followed by some larger standard grey donkeys. Last but not least, there are some goats available for adoption.

So if you've been thinking about adopting a miniature horse - if only as a companion for your current herd - this might be your chance. If you have some extra hay, or know of someone selling good quality hay at a reasonable price, please get them in touch with the Rescue. And finally, any help that you can provide to offset the medical expenses that these animals need, we greatly appreciate your generosity.

So, without further ado - here are the animals that are available.

Minis!

#1: Mini mare and her recently born foal (born as the Fox9 camera crew showed up). Has been dewormed and Coggins tested, along with receiving the first round of shots.

Ponies!

#1: This fellow has been named "Teto". He's still pretty shy, but really curious He's been haltered - makes it easier to deworm, vaccinate, and perform other tests - but that's about it. He's currently a stallion, but will soon be gelded per our standard policy.
#2: This fellow has been named "Zorro" and while curious, he's still shy around humans. He's been vaccinated and dewormed, and is in fair health and since he's a stallion, he will be gelded shortly per our policy.
#3: This brown mare (presently unnamed) has been moved to foster care. Prior to this, she was Coggins tested, de-wormed and de-loused, and received her first set of shots.
#4: This mare - the bay one on the left, that is - has recently been moved to foster care and is presently unnamed. Prior to this, she was Coggins tested, de-wormed and de-loused, and received her first set of shots. The pony on the right has already been adopted out.
#5: This mare came to us with a damaged/destroyed right eye that was never treated. We have since tended to the eye so that it is permanently closed and she is in much better spirits about the whole thing. Her foal is still waiting to be weaned, but has been adopted.

Donkeys!

If you'd like to learn more about these Donkeys, please call Karen at 651-773-3096

#1: This is a 7-year-old standard sized donkey jennet named Thema. She is friendly and does lead and has a new baby girl at her side.
#6: This is a 2-year-old miniature donkey jennet. She has never been handled by humans and will need a special person to help her overcome her fears. However, given the time and effort we've put into her confidence, she is gaining trust.
#7: This is a 3-year-old miniature donkey jennet. She has never been handled by humans and will need a special person to help her overcome her fears. She presently has a little jennet at her side.
#8: This is a 1-year-old standard sized donkey jennet. She is the baby of #1. She has never been handled by humans and will need a special person to help her overcome her fears.
