Since we announced Twilight’s adoption in October, we have had several people contact us who knew all of the horses when they were at the St. Cloud Children’s Home. We just want to let everyone know they have now all found great adoptive homes! It has been just over two years since we took all 6 of the senior horses in when SCCH had to close their equine program. These horses spent many years providing comfort to kids during troubled times. We often hear from those kids (now grown up) about how much having the horses there meant to them. We are very happy to have been able to help SCCH when they could no longer keep the horses. Thank you so much to our adoptive and foster homes, our donors and our volunteers! We could not do this without the support of people like you!

Thank you to Jess and Dan for this update on Uno the cat!
And once again, thank you to everyone who donated to cover the cost of the amputation surgery (he had been caught in a trap and needed all but one toe amputated on a front paw), and thank you at All Pets Vet in Zimmerman for their care!
“Uno has settled into his new family! He loves to be petted and is learning how to play! Watching nature from the inside is one of his favorite activities! He also gets along with his cat “siblings.” Thank you to the caring community that gave Uno a chance to enjoy his life!”–Jess

Thank you to Laurelyn for these pics of Edgar Allan Poe along with this update:
“I’m told Edgar Allan Poe was saved by MHARF four years ago today. He is celebrating by showing off his bravery. The dump trucks, skeletons, witches and semi trucks are nothing, but the tall grass with unknowns lurking on the side of the road still need to be conquered.”

Thank you so much to Deb and family for this wonderful tribute to Max, for giving him a great life, and for making the right decision for him when the time came. Rest in Peace, Max.
“We started fostering Max from MHARF in April 2010. It took the people who were temporarily caring for him a few hours to get him into the trailer to bring him to us, our little red foster gelding who arrived so timid and shy. It took months and months before Kaitlin was able to touch his ears, he‘d tremble in fear and it made us wonder what kind of life he had had before coming to live with us.
His vet guessed he was in his late teens to early 20’s at the time, he was a bit stiff and had retinal scarring in both eyes. We watched him for Uveitis, using a UV fly-mask on him and watched his eyes for any discharge.
Whenever we tried to bring him in from the pasture, he couldn’t be caught. We finally decided to bring every horse in the pasture into the indoor arena, leaving him alone and pacing the fence-line, only then did he allow us to handle him.
Slowly, he began to gain trust in us and allowed us to groom him, give him hugs and kisses. Kaitlin was the first to ride him. She was calming and gentle, talked to him softly and gave him lots of pats and scratches. (Kaitlin works at Complete Equestrian Company). He would ride in a halter with a lead rope attached, we never put a bit in his mouth. Always on the narrow side, we had trouble finding a saddle that would fit him. Peanuts pony saddle fit him just right or the kids would ride him bareback. My granddaughter Madi’s friends loved grooming and riding our sweet old boy. Over the next couple of years, Max took care of a lot of kids. He was a very gentle and safe ride. We all grew to love him so much.
A few years ago, we started feeding him senior feed to keep his weight up. The slightest change to his feed had to be done a little at a time or he’d walk away from his bowl. Last year, he started losing weight and we tried new things to help him gain. He was separated from the other horses at feeding time because he ate so slowly, but he’d finish it all if you gave him the time.
This year, he’s separated from the other horses for several hours while he still eats all his food, loves his alfalfa mix hay but he’s not gaining and his arthritis is making it more difficult for him to move around.
Our hearts are breaking because we know Max, now about 30 yrs old, won’t do well this winter and we won’t ask him to stay because we don’t want to say goodbye to our dear sweet old gentle red gelding that we’ve grown to love so much.
Max will be leaving us today, crossing the Rainbow Bridge to join Sage and Milo with Dallas waiting to meet him. Our hearts are breaking and we’ll be there with him, petting and kissing his nose as we say goodbye to our dear old friend. We love Max so very much.
Thank you for allowing us to give him a home for the past 8 1/2 yrs.”

Thank you so much to Dani and her family for giving Jack O’Hearts such a great home for so many years! We are very sorry for their loss.
“It’s with mixed emotions and heavy heart we update you that our MHARF alum Jack O’Hearts was humanely euthanized Tuesday 10/2/18. It was an honor working with Jack and being his best friend and partner for the last 12 years. We thank the rescue for giving Jacko a chance. He was a one of a kind special horse whom we will never forget. We will love him forever.
His pal he left behind is really struggling without a buddy and we promised Jack before he went, that in his honor we’d look into adopting another MHARF horse in need of a home.” –Dani

Thank you to Sandra for this update on Willa!
“Willa is doing great! She loaded and hauled very well. She has settled right in with my gelding.
They are inseparable and there has been no squabbling.
Thank you for all your assistance. It’s been a pleasure dealing with you and I know I made the right choice.”

Thank you so much to Erin for this update on her adopted MHARF horse Kelso! Congratulations to Erin and Kelso for all of their accomplishments. We LOVE to see these updates.
“Hello! I just wanted to send forward an update on Kelso, who I adopted 9.5 years ago! I am so thankful you rescued him and he got paired with me!
Kelso came into my life nine and a half years ago, and I have him to thank for everything. We were a couple of kids who knew nothing other than that we loved to have fun and run around playing in fields. Fast forward to now and Kelso has not only earned me my Level Four in Parelli Natural Horsemanship, but also my USDF Bronze and Silver Medal, and he became my best friend along the way! People cannot believe he is a rescue horse and I cannot believe he is mine. There are so many great things to say about this little Wonder Pony, but for the sake of brevity, I must say thank you to him for being everything good in my life. Also, Thank you Drew and everyone at MHARF who changed Kelso’s and my life for the better!
We are so thankful for what you did for us and for every horse you rescue!
Erin and Wonder Pony, Kelso”

Thank you to Vicky for this update on her two adopted donkeys! These two were originally from a June 2017 Pine County humane case.
“Penny Mae (May) and Perlita (Apple Brown Betty) are doing wonderfully! (Though not so thrilled with all this rain we are getting!) They have been making progress and are getting more and more comfortable and affectionate. Penny still hesitates to come inside the barn, even for treats, but they have run in shelters outside as well so for now I haven’t pressed the issue. When it’s time for the farrier or vet visits, she will begrudgingly cooperate and oblige us! Perlita is definitely the bossier of the two and the first to remind me when she thinks she’s due for a treat, though Penny has been getting more vocal as well. I love their pleading hee-haws when they know it’s time for “grain” (enriched timothy hay pellets). I just love these girls! Their hooves are looking great and they both are standing normally now. No signs of laminitis. Whew! We added four sheep who were in need of a home this last spring and the adjustment is going well (though Perlita chased them after they got sheared- thinking they were intruders I imagine!). Sometimes she will stand in their stall in the barn. Not sure what she’s thinking…. 🙂“–Vicky
