Archie (Deceased)

Update 03/09/22: We were notified late last night that Archie had begun to colic. Despite the best efforts of the wonderful veterinarians and staff at Anoka Equine, his pain was just too extreme and could no longer be alleviated with medication. The decision was made to humanely euthanize him shortly after midnight. We want to thank everyone at AEVS for the kindness and care they gave this boy during his time there. He was warm, fed, and loved. Someone always stayed with him while he was fed his mash. His stall was always clean and dry. The most important thing was that they were there for him when he needed it most, and early this morning he needed the final kindness of humane euthanasia. Thank you so much to Dr. Margo and everyone at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services. And thank you so much to all of our supporters for the prayers, positive thoughts, kind words, and donations you sent to Archie during his time with us.

Update 03/08/22: Archie had a rough night last night. He went down and needed assistance getting back up. His temperature has also been fluctuating because he just doesn’t have the body mass to keep a consistent temperature. We are so thankful that he can be in his heated stall at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services where he is being served meals of warm mash and getting plenty of attention.

Update 03/07/22: During his dental exam today, the vet discovered some deep ulcers in Archie’s mouth that were most likely caused by being fed hay containing foxtail grass (U of M Extension info on foxtail). He had also been wearing a very tight halter which was pressing the ulcers against his teeth (making eating quite painful). He does still have most of his teeth, but his molars and premolars are very worn (photo is a view of the inside of his left cheek, showing left upper molars at top). His estimated age is early to mid-twenties. He is currently on a diet of mash while he heals and is showing a little interest in hay again. Thank you to everyone at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services for their excellent care and thank you to everyone who has donated towards Archie’s care and recovery!

Update 03/05/22: We’re happy to report that Archie is still up and he is eating well! He is enjoying his warm mash and his clean, warm box stall at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services. He is free of the tight halter and the heavy rope he has been tethered with for who knows how long. He did have a slight nose bleed this morning so is being monitored. The plan is for him to have a full dental exam on Monday after he has had a few days to continue gaining strength.

03/04/22: Archie is a palomino gelding who came to us from a March 2022 owner surrender case in Hubbard County. He is currently at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services and is now getting the care he needs. (Thank you to Investigator Oquist from Animal Humane Society of Minnesota). He is in our Rehabilitation program and not available for adoption at this time. Watch for updates!
