Kepri
Kepri is a miniature mare who came to us from a January 2025 Carlton County case in which we assisted an owner to surrender horses after multiple fines for loose livestock and inability to provide secure fencing. Kepri was not used to being handled and is needed some time to learn to trust people. She had her intake veterinary work done, including vaccinations, coggins test, and having blood drawn and sent to UC Davis for a pregnancy check (which came back positive). In May 2025, Kepri gave birth to a beautiful filly. Her foster home named the filly Aspen May. Both Kepri and Aspen will be available for adoption individually after Aspen is old enough to be weaned. However, they could be adopted into a home together at this time.
Here is what Kepri’s foster home has to say about her:
We have finally started working with Kepri now that she is no longer pregnant. She is coming along nicely, but is certainly still considered a project. She needs someone who will respect her boundaries but continue to work with her daily on trusting humans. We can pet her all over on her left side, but she is still very afraid of hand pets on the right side. She is wearing a halter and leads well. We do still keep a catch rope on her just to make it easy to catch her, but we are hoping soon we will be able to get that off of her.
Considering she had never been handled prior to February 2025, then gave birth in May, she is doing phenomenally well. This girl is very willing and once she learns to trust the humans around her, she will come around quickly. She is a looker with a ton of hair and a sweet personality to match.
Kepri spends daylight hours in a paddock and willingly runs into a stall for nighttime. She shares her paddock with an alpaca and a fence line with both full size and mini horses. We get the sense that she will be higher in the pecking order of a herd, but haven’t really tested that since she still has a foal at her side.
Give this girl a chance – she is going to be really special.
