Woody

Woody is a senior gelding who came to MHARF in November 2022. He’s an older gelding we were asked to take in after he became homeless through a series of unfortunate circumstances. Woody is very thin and was sorely in need of dental care. He is currently enjoying the comfort of a stall at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services where he has been started on a refeeding program and is doing well. We are hopeful that he will recover quickly now that it’s no longer painful for him to eat. Dental care is so important to maintaining a horse’s health. no matter their age!

Update 11/25/22: Woody has now been moved to the MHARF farm for rehab.

Update: 12/01/22: Woody has been adopted! Normally we don’t make horses available for adoption until they are well on their way to being fully rehabilitated, but we made and exception in Woody’s case because his adopter is very knowledgeable about caring for and re-feeding starved horses. She will continue to work with Woody’s vets at Anoka Equine to make sure he gets the care he needs.

Bookem Danno (adopted)

Bookem Danno is a Friesian x Spanish Mustang gelding who originally came to MHARF in 2010. He was foaled in approximately 2005 and had not had much previous handling. He was placed in our 2011 Trainer’s Challenge with a trainer from Midwest Western Dressage. He and his trainer Jen competed successfully in the event and she then adopted him. Recent changes at work meant that Jen could no longer keep Danno on the schedule he needed and she has very sadly had to return him to MHARF. Danno stands approximately 15.1hh and he is big-bodied, strong horse. He tends to be dominant in a herd.

Danno is currently in training with Marirose Berner MJB Horse Training and is suitable for a confident intermediate rider. He has a great work ethic and likes to have a job. He would make a good lesson horse or a lower level dressage horse. Marirose says he is a lot of fun to ride and everyone at the barn loves him.

Pink (Adopted)

Pink is a 2007 paint mare who came to MHARF in September 2022 as an owner surrender. Pink is thin and has stringhalt that was most likely caused by an old injury. She is scheduled for a tendonectomy at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services, a procedure that has a 65% chance of correcting the issue and making her sound.

Update 09/18/22: Pink had her tendonectomy. She will be on stall rest for a while and we won’t know for several weeks if the surgery was successful. We will update her info as soon as we know more.

Update 10/07/22: Pink remains mostly on stall rest for now after her tendonectomy surgery, but she does get to come out for some grazing time and to check out her surroundings. We don’t expect to have a definite prognosis for her recovery for a few weeks yet. Time, patience and TLC is what she needs!

Update: 11/09/22: Pink has recovered well from her surgery but still has a mild hitch in her step. She will never be a riding horse, but can have a very happy life as a companion for another horse–which is great because she has an adoption in the works for just that purpose!

Journey (Adopted)

Journey has been Adopted!

Journey is a registered quarter horse gelding (Little Star Journey) who was foaled in 2002. He was surrendered to MHARF by his owners in August 2022 because they could not give him the care he needs. Journey is extremely thin, but we were lucky to get him in time to save him. He was put on a careful ,refeeding program and as soon as he gained enough weight to handle the procedure, he was scheduled for dental work. On 09/16/22 Journey had his dental surgery at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services to remove a broken molar. He was reactive, and the tooth must have been very painful because even with sedation and nerve blocking, he couldn’t tolerate the work being done in his mouth. He had to have general anesthesia in the surgery suite, which was much more expensive but definitely worth it because it was successful and the broken pieces of tooth were removed. He had a difficult recovery but is now bright and eating well.

Update 01/18/23: Journey is now doing very well and is available for adoption. He does still require grain twice a day. He has not yet been assessed for training level but is in line as soon as we have an opening.

Lacey (Adopted)

Lacey has been Adopted!

Lacey is a Tennessee Walking Horse/ Paso Fino  mare who was foaled around 2009. She stands approximately 14.2hh. Lacey is a nice mare who is a little more on the nervous side temperament-wise. She did not have much handling at all before she came to us and she had some trust issues. She is currently in training with Anna Hill of Longstocking Stables where she has learned to ground drive, tie, load, stand for saddling, bathe, and stand for bug spray. She has also learned to be good for the vet and farrier. She is now also started under saddle and is doing really well. Lacey is available for adoption to a quiet and confident experienced rider who would like to continue this sweet and beautiful mare’s training.
